Hey everyone! So my dad was in the Navy, and he passed away a few years ago. My parents divorced a long time ago, and my mom never remarried, but my dad did. Now, his wife is heading into assisted living, and I’m trying to figure out if she might qualify for any military benefits to help with the costs. Anyone familiar with this kind of thing? I’d appreciate any advice!
You could look into the VA’s Aid and Attendance program. It helps with assisted living costs if she meets the income requirements and was married to him when he passed. Worth checking out!

Oh, thanks for the tip! I’ll look into it. Do you know if it’s hard to qualify?

It can be a bit strict on income requirements, but if she’s eligible, it’s a great help!
If she wasn’t listed as a beneficiary on any military documents, she might not be eligible for certain benefits like the Survivor Benefit Plan (SBP). Have you checked on that?

Yeah, she’s not listed as a beneficiary. I wasn’t sure if that would totally disqualify her or not.

Not having the SBP might limit options, but there are still other benefits she could look into!
If he passed due to anything related to his service, maybe Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) could help. Was his passing connected to his Navy time?

Honestly, I don’t think it was. But I’ll double-check. Thanks for the heads-up!

No problem! If he had any service-connected conditions, it’s worth a look.
California might have some state-specific programs that help with long-term care. Maybe check with the California Department of Veterans Affairs?

Good idea! I hadn’t thought of looking into California-specific benefits. Thanks!

Yeah, I’ve heard CA has a few unique benefits for veterans and their families.
Start by gathering any paperwork you have, like his DD-214 form. Most applications need it, so having that ready will help!

Will do, thanks! I’ll dig around and see what I can find.

Yeah, the DD-214 is super important. Good luck!
