Hey everyone, I’m dealing with a tenant who is suing me for harassment. She claims I entered her apartment without permission before her lease was officially terminated. I made a mistake with the dates and went in four days early, thinking the lease was already up. Now she’s asking for compensation that’s three times her rent. Has anyone faced something like this?
That sounds frustrating! Did you actually go inside the apartment, or was it just opening the door by mistake?

I just opened the door and realized my mistake, then closed it right away. I didn’t even step inside.

If you didn’t actually go in, seems like she’s overreacting with the harassment claim.
I’m no lawyer, but sounds more like a misunderstanding than harassment. Maybe talk to a legal expert?

Yeah, I did check in with a lawyer. They said it’s probably not harassment, but I still feel a bit worried.

Makes sense. Probably a good idea to get everything in writing in case it goes further.
Did she have a camera that actually caught you opening the door? If she’s got evidence, it might be a bit tricky.

Yep, unfortunately, she had a camera. It only shows me opening the door and closing it right away.

As long as you didn’t go in, it should still be okay. Cameras catch everything these days.
Honestly, I don’t think she has a strong case if you didn’t actually enter. Seems like a stretch for harassment.

I hope so! I just don’t want this to get blown out of proportion, you know?
Trespass maybe, but harassment? Sounds unlikely unless she’s got more evidence.

Right, that’s what I’m thinking too. I just wish I hadn’t made that date mix-up.

We’ve all been there, honestly. Hope it doesn’t go further than this.
