Has anyone been through something like this? My child (she’s 20) was put in detention and now they’re putting a GPS tracker on her. We’re trying to figure out how to challenge this without hiring a lawyer because the fees are really high. Any ideas or similar experiences?
Yikes, that sounds intense! Do you know why they’re using the tracker?

Not really, it just feels excessive. We’re just trying to free her first and sort out the details after.

You might need to check if there was a court order for that. GPS is usually ordered for serious reasons.
@Vesper
Good point. I think we need to dig into that and see if it’s justified. Thanks!

Did this happen while she was under 18? Some protections might still apply if it started back then.
Got it. Still, might be worth checking if there’s any leftover jurisdiction from when she was younger.

I think you can file motions yourself, even without a lawyer. It’s called filing pro se. A bit tricky, but doable.
Yeah, we’re considering that. We have a friend in the U.S. who could help with the paperwork too.

Definitely look into pro se resources. Many courts have self-help centers for people filing on their own.

No, she’s 20 now, so it’s a bit complicated with adult laws.
If you think it’s a civil rights issue, maybe reach out to the ACLU or other organizations. They help in cases like this.

That’s a good idea. We’re open to getting any kind of support since we’re not there in the U.S.
If they didn’t give proper notice before using the tracker, you might be able to contest it. Just need to file a motion for a hearing.

Yeah, that sounds like a good route. We’ll look into what’s possible from abroad.
