Anyone dealt with special needs school placement issues... advice?

Hey everyone, I’m having some issues with my son’s school placement. He’s being sent to a school within the district, but it’s the farthest one from my house. There are other schools closer to us with special needs units. The drive is about 18 minutes, and he gets car sick on the bus. I asked why they didn’t send him to the same school he was at last year, but I got really vague answers. Anyone know how to request a change to a closer school? I get that his home unit is full, but there are other schools nearby that have special needs units. Any advice on how I can go about this? I’m in Ohio btw.

That’s really frustrating. I’m not an expert, but I would recommend contacting the superintendent directly. They’re the highest authority and can help make things happen. Also, don’t forget to mention the car sickness—if it’s affecting his health, that should be taken seriously.

@Kim
I didn’t even think of mentioning the car sickness in the request! That’s a great point. I’ll definitely bring it up.

I had a similar issue with my kid. The special needs coordinator should be your first point of contact, but the superintendent is above them. If they keep giving you vague answers, escalate it to the superintendent and even the school board if needed.

@Mika
Yeah, I’ve been in touch with the special needs coordinator. I wasn’t sure who’s above them, so thanks for the info!

Seems like they’re just not giving you a clear reason why they’re not placing him closer. If you’re getting nowhere with the coordinator, keep pushing until you get a clear answer. It’s not too much to ask for a school that’s closer.

@Murphy
I agree! I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t send him somewhere closer. Hopefully, contacting the superintendent will make a difference.

Ugh, that sounds so stressful. Definitely try escalating to the superintendent if you haven’t already. You have every right to request a placement that works for your family.

I’m going to do that today. Hopefully, they’ll take me seriously. Thanks for the support!

I’m no expert, but maybe look into the Ohio state laws regarding special needs education placements. That might give you more leverage when talking to them.

That’s a good idea! I’ll check out the state laws and see if they have anything that could help me make my case.
