Hey, so I’ve been dealing with a lot of stuff recently. I served in the USAF & Active Reserves from 1975-1988, and currently, I’m at 40% disability for a back injury. I’m also waiting on a hearing loss/tinnitus appeal. I just got denied a final appeal for a Pilot Medical Certificate with the FAA because they said I have ‘substantial neurological impairment’ (slowed reaction time). The FAA blames my issue on alcohol-related problems because I’ve been sober for 19 years and had my first DUI back in '75-76 while active duty. On top of that, I was exposed to trichloroethylene cleaning jet engine parts. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Looking for advice from someone who’s been through it. Thanks!
Man, that’s rough. I can’t relate to the FAA side, but I know getting the VA rating bumped can be a challenge. They don’t make it easy. Have you had any luck with the VA before?
I’m not sure about the FAA side, but have you looked into having a coach or expert guide you through this? I’ve heard of some people getting good advice from military-focused attorneys for stuff like this.
It’s tough when the FAA links everything to alcohol, even after you’ve been sober for years. You might want to look into whether the exposure to chemicals could be connected to any of your symptoms. That could help you build a case for the VA increase.
I feel for you, man. It seems like the FAA’s decision is based on some assumptions. You might want to talk to a disability lawyer who specializes in these cases. They could really help clarify things for you.
Just reading through this, I get how frustrating this must be. Are you planning to try for another appeal or move forward with the VA? Seems like the FAA’s door is closed for now.
