I served from 1977 to 1981, and I’m trying to figure out if I qualify for any VA healthcare benefits. I’ve never applied before, so I’m not really sure where to start or what benefits I might be eligible for. Anyone else been through this?
I think it depends on a few things. Since you served for 4 years, you might still be eligible for VA healthcare. Have you had any service-connected injuries or anything like that?

No injuries that I know of, but I’m wondering if I qualify for something else, like based on my income or service history.
@Neve
That’s a good point! Even without a disability, you might be able to qualify for healthcare if your income fits into the right category. Worth checking out for sure.
I’m in a similar situation. I served around the same time, and I was able to apply for VA healthcare. You can do it online or in person at the VA office. Have you looked into that?

I haven’t applied yet. I didn’t know I could do it online, that makes it easier! Thanks for the heads up!
Make sure you have your DD214 form ready when you apply. It’ll make the process quicker. They’ll need that to verify your service.

Got it, thanks! I’ll dig up my DD214 and get started on the application.
You might also qualify for other benefits like a VA pension or disability compensation if you have health conditions related to your service. Have you looked into those?

I didn’t realize that was an option. I’ll check out the pension stuff too.
Definitely check out local veteran support groups. They can really help you navigate all the paperwork and make sure you don’t miss anything important.

I didn’t think about that, good idea! I’ll look into VFW or DAV for help.
