Hey all, I’m active duty, and my wife’s a veteran (now my dependent). We’ve got 2 minor kids, and I need some guidance on military family law. Where do I even begin? Are there specific steps I should take or things I need to know before diving into this? Any advice would be great!
First thing, are you looking for help with custody, benefits, or something else? Military law can cover a lot, lol.

Good question. I think I’m mostly focused on custody and benefits for now. But it’s a bit overwhelming tbh.

Same boat here! I’d suggest checking out your base’s legal office for starters. They can give you some direction.
Did you know about the free legal services for active duty at most bases? Might be worth looking into.

Oh, I didn’t! Do you know what kind of help they can offer?

They usually help with stuff like custody, benefits, and family legal issues. Just call your JAG office to set something up.
If your wife’s a veteran, she might have additional resources through the VA. Could be worth checking out?

That’s a good idea. I didn’t even think about that. Thanks for the tip!
FYI, make sure you get everything documented, especially if you’re dealing with custody. It can save you a lot of hassle later.

Totally agree. And if you’re unsure how to start, JAG or a private lawyer can help you get organized.
IDK if this applies, but some states have different rules for military families. You might want to research your state’s laws.

Good point. I’ll start digging into that. Thanks for the heads-up!
