Anyone here tried making a voice assistant for their smart home?

How fast is the speech-to-text? I tried something similar on an older mini PC, and it was pretty slow.

The speed depends on how you set up the voice pipeline. I use HA Cloud since I have a Nabu Casa subscription, and it’s fast enough for me. You could also try the faster-whisper add-on if you’re using a local pipeline.

@Vick
Makes sense! Another reason to get that subscription, I guess.

You can try it free for a month. Personally, I think the Nabu Casa subscription is worth it.

Funny, I just saw a video on this where someone ran a local LLM with two 4090s! Cool, but not realistic for most people.

@Dakotah
I bought a mini PC with a mobile GPU, and it does a bit better, but still a lot of power for this.

True! At least he tried to demo it on a laptop, too.

Hopefully, this tech will get cheaper over time. For now, something like the M5 Stack module could be an option for smaller setups.

@Vick
Haven’t seen these before. What else would I need to get started?

First step would be finding one since they’re out of stock in most places.

Still took 5 seconds? I’d rather deal with a bit of lag using HA Cloud.

@Quince
No, the AMD setup does it in under a second, but I haven’t tried it much yet.

I’m using a Pi Zero 2 W and find it pretty fast, about the same as Alexa. Also using HA Cloud with Google LLM as a backup, so maybe a faster local setup would improve it.

How do you keep Bluetooth speakers from turning off after a while?

I had to buy a specific brand that doesn’t turn off if it’s connected. Look for that feature or make sure to keep them plugged in if they’re battery-powered.

Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about something related to criminal cases. Can a defense attorney question the statements made by an interviewee during cross-examination, especially if they spoke to an officer previously? I’m curious if prior statements can be challenged at trial. Any ideas?
