Hey, I’ve been trying to understand how DFAS payments work… like, what’s the usual delivery method? Also, how’s the amount calculated? Anyone here familiar with this?
Yeah, they mostly use direct deposit. It’s super common and way faster than getting a check in the mail.

Gotcha. So checks are still an option though, right? Just slower?

Yep, but paper checks can get delayed, and there’s always the risk of them getting lost.
The payment amount depends on stuff like your rank and years of service. If you’re retired, it’s based on your retirement plan.

Thanks! Is there a way to check how they calculate everything?

Yeah, check your Leave and Earnings Statement (LES) or Retiree Account Statement (RAS). It breaks down everything.
FYI, entitlements like Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) can also change the total payment amount.

BAH? What’s that? I’m not sure I’ve heard of it.

BAH = Basic Allowance for Housing. It’s an extra amount for housing costs, depending on where you’re stationed.
Just curious, has anyone had issues with DFAS payments being delayed?

Not yet, but I’m kinda nervous about delays. Are they common?

Rare with direct deposit, but it can happen with paper checks if there’s an address mix-up.
