I got a ticket from the School Bus Safety Program here in New York, not from the DMV. I’m thinking about disputing it, but I’m curious about how long it usually takes to get a court date after mailing back a response. Also, if I can’t make the date, can I reschedule it or have a lawyer represent me? Anyone know how that works?
I’m not sure about the exact wait time, but usually, for traffic tickets in NY, you’re looking at about 60 days for a court date. Definitely give yourself enough time to get everything organized before then.
@Carter
60 days sounds reasonable. I was worried it might be quicker. Thanks for the info!
Yeah, I had a similar experience with a ticket, and I was able to reschedule. The court should give you the option to choose another date if you can’t make the original one, especially if you have a valid reason. It’s always good to check with them though!
@Toby
That’s good to know. I wasn’t sure if they’d let me do that. I’ll definitely ask if I need to reschedule.
If you’re disputing it, make sure you gather all your evidence. It’ll help a lot in court if you have your timeline and any documents ready. I’ve heard of people winning these types of cases!

I’ll definitely get everything in order. It’s just stressful with the waiting, but hopefully I can get it sorted out.
I was in the same boat a while ago. Once you deny the wrongdoing, they’ll typically send you a notice of the court date within a couple of months. You can also look into getting a lawyer to help out if you’re not able to make it.
@Dior
Good to know. I wasn’t sure if I’d get an automatic court date or if it’d take a while.
For the lawyer part, you can absolutely have one represent you, and some lawyers will even help you reschedule if needed. It’s really common for them to handle everything for you, especially if you’re busy!
@Kim
That sounds like a good option. I might consider getting a lawyer to handle it, especially if I can’t make it.
