I got medically discharged out of AIT and on my DD214 it says ‘general.’ I was wondering if there’s any way to correct this? It’s been a while, but I’m just starting to look into it now. Any advice or steps I should follow?
I had a similar issue. You might be able to get it corrected by submitting a request to the Board for Correction of Military Records (BCMR). It’s a process that can take some time, but they’ll review your case and can change the discharge status if they find it was an error. Definitely get any supporting medical records together!
I went through something similar. I filed for a discharge upgrade to honorable and got it. It can be a long process, but it’s worth it if you think your discharge wasn’t fair.
I know the process can be a pain, but try contacting a military lawyer. They can help you gather everything you need and guide you through the paperwork. I did it for a friend and it made the whole process much easier.
You might also want to get in touch with the VA once your discharge status is upgraded. They’ll help you with getting a disability rating based on your service conditions. It’s a whole separate process, but it’s something you can do once the discharge issue is fixed.
