hey everyone, i’m dealing with a revoked license from new york state because of old dwi stuff. i haven’t lived in ny since 2013, but their system is still blocking me from getting a license in other states. i tried applying in north carolina, but they said ny has to clear me first. anyone been through this or have tips? i just want to sort this out before i move back to the us next year. thanks!
ugh, that sounds like such a hassle. have you tried filing an appeal with the ny dmv? i heard they have a specific process for that.

yeah, i filed something back in 2019, but they denied it. they said i’m not eligible because of too many offenses.
@Vesper
did you complete any kind of rehab or probation? sometimes showing that can help with appeals.

yup, i finished all that back in 2013. they still said no because of their ‘serious driving offense’ rule.
wait, what’s the driver’s license compact? i’ve seen it mentioned before but not sure how it works.

it’s a system where states share driving records. if you’re revoked in one state, others won’t let you get a license either.
@Landry
ah, got it. so basically, ny has to clear them before nc or anywhere else will issue a license?

exactly. super annoying, but it’s how the system works.
honestly, you might need a lawyer who specializes in this. ny dmv doesn’t make it easy to navigate their rules.

yeah, i was thinking about that. any idea how much that might cost? i’m not in the us right now, so that complicates things.
@Vesper
depends on the lawyer, but you could try legal aid if money’s tight. avvo.com is a good place to start looking!
have you tried submitting that ds-115 form to request reinstatement? it’s the standard way to get ny to reconsider.

i did in 2019 and they said no. they’re strict about the 3 offenses rule.
not sure if this helps, but you only have 60 days to appeal their denial. if you’re past that, you might have to reapply first.

ugh, that’s good to know but super frustrating. looks like i’ll be starting from scratch.
