Anyone know if I have recourse for a military discharge due to concussion?

Hey, I had a head injury back in 1974 that required 7 stitches. This led to me being accused of breaking the rules, and I ended up being discharged with an honorable discharge. Do I have any recourse for this? I’ve been reading about concussions and what they’ve learned since then, but I’m not sure what options I have now.

Oof, that sounds rough. Not sure about your case specifically, but if it was a general discharge under honorable, you might be able to apply for a discharge upgrade. I know a lot has changed since then with how concussions are handled.

@Toby
Wait, what’s a discharge upgrade? I didn’t know that was a thing.

Yeah, a discharge upgrade is when you ask for a reclassification of your discharge status. If it was ‘general under honorable,’ you can apply for an upgrade to ‘honorable.’ But it’s a process.

So sorry to hear about your injury. If it’s causing long-term issues, you could also look into a VA rating. They might give you disability benefits if it’s impacting your life.

A VA rating? What’s that exactly?

@Finnick
A VA rating is when the VA evaluates how much your injury affects your ability to live/work. If it’s severe enough, you could get benefits, like compensation for medical care or disability support.

I would suggest speaking to a military lawyer to get more info on whether you have a case. You might have some options, even if it’s been years.

Yeah, definitely get in touch with someone who specializes in military law. They can probably help guide you through what options are available.

It’s crazy how much they’ve learned about concussions since the 70s. You might have some grounds for a reevaluation if the injury was serious enough.

Yeah, it’s wild how much they’ve changed their approach to head injuries. I hope you get some answers!

Sorry about your injury. If the discharge was honorable, it’s tough to change it, but there are still things you can try, like a VA claim or even a legal review. It might be worth looking into.
