So I bought this ‘export only’ salvage vehicle with a Texas title and I’m wondering if it’s even possible to register it in the US. I haven’t tried registering it yet because I have no clue where to start. Has anyone dealt with this before?
Yeah, ‘export only’ titles can be tricky. It usually means the car isn’t supposed to be driven here. You’ll probably need to get it inspected and possibly re-titled as rebuilt. Have you talked to the Texas DMV?
@Wren
I called them, and they said I’d need to file a court order. Not sure what that involves though.
@Wren
Oh wow, a court order? That sounds like a headache. Maybe check with a lawyer or someone who’s done this before.
If Texas is being difficult, you could try registering it in a state with more lenient rules. Vermont or Florida might be worth looking into.

Really? Vermont or Florida could work? What makes them more lenient?

They’re known for being more straightforward with salvage titles. You’d still need inspections, but it’s not as strict as some states.
IDK much about court orders, but if the DMV said that, you’re probably stuck with Texas unless you go through that process. Have you considered just fixing it up for export instead?

I thought about it, but I’d really like to drive it here. Exporting it feels like a last resort.
You might want to hire someone who specializes in salvaged or export vehicles. They’d know how to navigate the court order thing.

Good idea. Do you think it’d be expensive to hire someone for this?

Depends on the case, but probably worth it if it saves you time and headaches.
FYI, even if you get it registered in another state, Texas might not recognize it. You’d need to double-check their rules for out-of-state titles.

Oh man, that’s a good point. I’ll make sure to look into that before doing anything.
