So here’s the deal… my kid’s in a private school, and the counselor there apparently asked him if he’d consider taking medication. They haven’t even met me, don’t know his full medical history, and have no idea about any diagnoses. Is that even allowed? Anyone dealt with something like this before?
Wow, that feels way out of line. Did the school have you sign anything about how they work with the kids?

Not really, just the general enrollment papers. Nothing about stuff like this. Feels like an overstep, right?

Sounds like they’re pushing boundaries. Maybe ask for their policies on this stuff?
Did your kid say anything to them about meds that might’ve prompted the question? Just curious.

Nope, he was just there for a meeting about his accommodations. No idea why she even brought it up.
In Texas, I think they have to be careful about stuff like this. You might want to check the school’s policies on counselor roles.

Yeah, some schools have clear guidelines about when they need to involve parents. Definitely worth asking for a copy of their rules.
What’s SSP? Never heard that term before.

Oh, sorry! It’s their Student Support Program counselor. Basically, they handle accommodations and stuff like that.

Got it, thanks! Sounds like she’s overstepping her role if you ask me.
If they haven’t met you and don’t know his history, why are they making suggestions? Feels unprofessional to me.

Exactly my thought. We’re waiting on a neuropsych eval next month, so I’ve asked that she not meet with him alone for now.
