Can I file a restraining order against my roommate…?

Hey everyone, I just moved to Las Vegas to share a place with a friend, and things are seriously not working out. I sent her rent and some cash before I got here, and now she’s been using my money for her own stuff, like her daughter and grandkids’ needs. She’s also been threatening me when I couldn’t pay October rent on time because I just started a job. I feel unsafe with the threats and her saying she’d get her son or even hurt me. I’m thinking about a restraining order—any advice?

Wow, that sounds rough! I think you can definitely look into a restraining order, especially if you’re feeling unsafe.

Thanks! I didn’t know if it was possible without a lease. Any idea if that matters?

@Drake
No problem! I think it’s more about the threats than the lease. You should still be able to file!

You could call the non-emergency line or look up local resources for tenant rights. Even without a formal lease, harassment isn’t allowed.

Yeah, I might just go that route. Didn’t know if I had options without an official agreement.

If she’s making those kinds of threats, you might want to document everything in case you need to show proof.

Good idea! I’ve been so stressed, I didn’t even think of keeping a record.

@Drake
Yeah, it helps a lot if you need to go to the police. Just keep a record of any texts or things she says.

Man, that sounds toxic. Is there any chance you can move out soon?

I wish! I’m new to town and don’t really know anyone else here.

Maybe look for roommates on local apps or FB groups? Sometimes you can find places fast that way.

Could you involve the police if it gets worse? That’s serious stuff.

Yeah, if she keeps it up, I think I’ll have to. Just hoping it doesn’t get to that point.
