Can I get unemployment if I was put on a PIP and then fired

So, I was put on a personal improvement plan (PIP) and eventually fired because I didn’t meet the expectations. Anyone know if I can still get unemployment benefits? I’m kinda lost here, tbh.

Yeah, from what I know, not meeting expectations on a PIP usually makes it tough to qualify for unemployment. Employers can appeal your claim, saying it was performance-related.

Wait, what’s a PIP? :thinking:

@Emerson
Oh, sorry! PIP stands for Personal Improvement Plan. It’s like a last warning from your job to improve performance before they decide if you stay or go.

That’s exactly it. If the employer says you didn’t meet standards, they can block your unemployment. It’s kinda harsh, but it happens a lot.

This happened to me too! Tried for unemployment but got denied. I think it’s because they see not meeting PIP goals as grounds to say it’s your fault.

Ugh, that’s what I was afraid of. Thanks for the heads up. :sweat_smile:

IDK if it’s possible in every case. Some states are more lenient, but a lot of them treat a failed PIP as performance-related, so you’re usually out of luck.

Yeah, I’ve heard it’s state-specific too. You could maybe appeal if you think they didn’t follow the process right?

@Dakotah
True, an appeal could work, but it’s a long shot. You’d need solid proof they didn’t follow procedure.

You can still apply, but there’s a good chance your employer will fight it if you didn’t meet PIP requirements.

Yeah, I think that’s what’ll happen. They were super strict with me during the whole PIP thing.

Maybe check with a local attorney just to see if there’s any chance? Sometimes they can help with appeals.

It’s a bummer, but yeah, not meeting PIP expectations usually means no benefits. You might still want to try applying though!

Thanks! I’ll probably give it a shot anyway just in case. :crossed_fingers:
