Can I switch my elk tag to the second season?

I already bought an elk tag for the first season, but now I’m wondering if I can switch it to the second season. Can this be done online, or do I need to go somewhere in person? Anyone dealt with this before?

You can usually exchange tags, but there’s a deadline. Did the first season already start or end?

Yeah, the first season ended on October 16. Does that mean I missed my chance to switch?

Unfortunately, yeah. Exchanges have to be done before the season starts. After that, it’s not allowed.

Exchanges cost $5, but you can’t get refunds or preference points back. Did you know about that?

No, I didn’t. Good to know for next time. Does that apply to all tag exchanges?

Yep, it’s a flat $5 fee for any exchange, but no refunds or points restoration. Gotta plan carefully.

If the second season hasn’t started yet, you might still have time, but check Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s rules ASAP.

I think OP’s first season tag already expired, so exchanges wouldn’t be possible now.

For future exchanges, you gotta do it at a CPW office or park before your tag’s season starts. Online doesn’t work for this.

Thanks! I wasn’t sure if online was an option. Guess I’ll plan better next time.

Just a heads-up, exchanges don’t restore your preference points. Keep that in mind if you’re planning future swaps.

Didn’t realize that! So even if I exchange, I don’t get points back? That kinda sucks.

Yeah, it’s a bummer. They’re strict about points, so plan carefully if you’re using a bunch to get a tag.
