Can I transfer my tag to a new car in FL?... anyone know?

Hey, so my car got totaled and I was wondering if I can transfer my tag to a new car I buy. I live in FL and my current registration is good till 02/12/2026. I’m still looking for a new car, so just trying to figure out the process. Anyone have experience with this?

Sorry to hear about your car! But yeah, you can transfer your tag to a new car as long as you’re still in the same state. It should be pretty easy, just make sure to check with the DMV once you get your new car.

You just need to take your current registration, proof of insurance, and the title for the new car to the DMV. They’ll help you transfer it over.

Hey, I’ve been through this process before. I had to transfer my tag when I got a new car in FL. As long as your insurance is up to date, it should be no problem.

Wait, so if my insurance isn’t active yet, I can’t transfer the tag? I thought it was just the car registration that mattered.

You need to have insurance active for the DMV to transfer the tag. It’s a legal requirement to have insurance before they’ll do it. Sorry!

I think it’s also important to check if you need a new title for the car. Sometimes, you need to submit that along with the registration.

Oh, good point! I didn’t think about the title. I’ll make sure to have that ready when I go to the DMV.

You should be fine as long as you’re transferring the tag to a similar vehicle. You’ll just have to fill out some paperwork, but it’s not too complicated.

I’m actually getting a similar car, so hopefully that makes it easier. Thanks for the help!
