Can my NCO push for my demotion just because he doesn’t like me?

So, my NCO’s been saying that I’m going to be put up for a demotion board, a bar, or a flag because he just doesn’t like me, and I honestly haven’t done anything to deserve it. My reenlistment’s already been approved and signed off on, and I’ve had no negative paperwork or counseling since joining this unit. Do I have any options to protect myself here?

Man, sounds like a rough spot. As long as you don’t have any formal paperwork, they might just be bluffing. Have you talked to anyone higher up?

Nope, just heard it from my E6, who says he talked to 1SGT. Haven’t gotten anything official.

If it’s just word of mouth, that sounds iffy. I’d say you’re in the clear unless something’s put in writing.

Did you have any kind of formal counseling? That’s usually where they start if they’re serious about demotion.

Nah, no counseling or anything. Just threats, I guess.

Sounds like he’s on a power trip then. If there’s no documented issues, I wouldn’t stress too much.

If your reenlistment was already approved, they’d have to do a lot to block it now. You should talk to legal, though.

Good idea, might set up a time with Trial Defense or legal on post.

Definitely a smart move. They’ll know how to deal with this better than anyone.

Just curious, can they demote you over performance without any official complaints?

From what I’ve heard, they can’t really do that unless there’s a documented pattern of underperformance. So I’m not sure what their case would be.

Yeah, they usually need a pattern. Without that, it’s just empty talk.

If they haven’t given you a chance to improve, they can’t just demote you out of nowhere, right?

That’s what I thought too. But the E6 was saying they’d go straight to a demotion board without giving me a chance.

Sounds like a stretch. Make sure legal’s aware if they try anything without fair warning.
