Can NJP affect my chances of becoming a lawyer?

Hey everyone, I’m currently in the Navy and thinking about becoming a lawyer someday—maybe even going to an Ivy League. The thing is, I had an NJP/Mast back in ‘A’ School for forgery. At the time, I didn’t realize how serious it was, but I’ve learned a lot from it and definitely regret it. My question is, will this affect me when I go through the bar association’s character and moral fitness evaluation after law school? Also, does NJP show up on my DD-214, and does it actually disappear after two years? Would appreciate any advice!

I’ve heard NJP doesn’t show up on the DD-214, but it stays in your military records permanently. So yeah, it could come up if they dig deeper.

Thanks for the info! So even if it’s not on my DD-214, they might still ask about it if they look into my military service?

Yep, bar associations ask about any disciplinary issues in your past. Just be honest about it when explaining what happened.

I know someone who got into law school after an NJP. They said the key was being upfront about it during the character and fitness part.

That’s good to hear. Did they ask for a detailed explanation of the incident?

Yeah, they had to write a statement about it. Just explain what happened, what you’ve learned, and how you’ve grown since then.

What does NJP mean? I’m not familiar with military terms.

It stands for Non-Judicial Punishment. Basically, it’s a military disciplinary action for minor infractions—not a criminal conviction though.

Ah, got it. So it’s more like an internal thing that doesn’t show up on a regular background check?

Exactly. It’s only in your military records, but honesty is still key if anyone asks about it.

I’d say don’t stress too much. I’ve seen people get through similar situations. Just own up to it if asked and focus on showing how you’ve grown since then.

Thanks, that’s reassuring. I’ve kept my record clean since then, so I hope that helps.

For sure, that’ll help a lot. Good luck with your goals—you’ve got this!
