So, here’s the deal: I was driving with expired registration, and the car broke down. I parked it on the side of the road to get it towed, but then someone hit it while it was parked. I’m just wondering, if I go to retrieve it, can I just identify myself as the owner of the car and not answer any questions about whether I was the one driving it? I know the registration is expired, but is there any chance they’ll come after me for anything worse, like jail time or something? Also, do I have to show my driver’s license to get the car back? I heard some places only need proof of insurance for impounded cars, but I just want to make sure I’m not missing anything… anyone been through something similar?
Oof, that sounds like a mess! But yeah, you can absolutely remain silent and not incriminate yourself. As for the license, you can’t really refuse to show it if they ask, though. You’d be expected to provide it. But honestly, if you’re just picking up your car, it shouldn’t be a huge deal as long as you can prove you’re the owner. I’d still check with a lawyer just to be sure tho.
@Zephyr
That’s what I thought too! I’ve had to show my insurance card when picking up my car from impound before. I think it depends on the city though.
@Zephyr
Yeah, same here. I got pulled over with expired registration and just showed my proof of insurance and ID to get the car back. The cops didn’t seem too bothered by it once I showed everything.
Sounds like you’re handling it well! Regarding jail time or record stuff—driving with expired registration is usually a fine, not jail time, unless it’s a repeat offense. But since it’s your first time and you’re fixing the situation, I wouldn’t worry too much. Just make sure to keep all your documents in order.
@Ben
I agree, the court probably won’t make a huge deal if it’s your first offense. Just pay the fine and you should be good.
I’d call the police first thing to make sure everything’s documented, though. That way if anything weird comes up, you’re not stuck without proof. You never know how things can get twisted!

Good call. I had a similar situation where I didn’t contact the police right away, and it caused some confusion when I went to get my car. Definitely do that first!
I wouldn’t stress too much about it. If they just want proof of insurance, then you should be fine. But yeah, don’t ignore the registration stuff. Once you get your car back, you should take care of that asap.
