So, my son and his two male roommates are being forced to share their dorm with a biological female. Apparently, the college’s policy is to wait until an issue happens before addressing it, and even then, it seems like they’d side with the student who doesn’t know their gender. My son and his roommates had a meeting with the resident director, but nothing is going to change. Is this even legal? What can we do?
Wow, that sounds really uncomfortable for everyone involved. Did the college explain why they won’t make any changes?

Not really. They just said it’s their protocol to wait for issues to arise before taking action. Super frustrating.

Their approach seems lazy. I’d start documenting everything that happens—it could be helpful later.
Have you looked at the college’s housing policies? Maybe there’s something there that supports your case.

Good idea. I haven’t checked yet, but I’ll go through the student handbook and see what it says.

The handbook might mention appeal procedures too. Colleges usually have those for housing issues.
IDK if this helps, but maybe contacting a lawyer could clarify if the college is breaking any laws.

Yeah, we might need legal advice. Not sure if this counts as a privacy or discrimination issue though.

Could be worth checking out resources like the ACLU or NSLDN for legal guidance.
What does ‘NSLDN’ stand for? Never heard of it before.

It’s the National Student Legal Defense Network. They help with legal stuff like student rights and housing issues.

Oh, cool. Thanks for explaining! I’ll check that out.
If the meeting with the resident director didn’t help, maybe escalate to a higher authority at the college.

We might have to. Not sure if they’ll listen, but it’s worth a shot.

Some colleges have a mediation service for housing conflicts. Have you looked into that?
