Back in April, the DMV gave me tags that didn’t match my registration or sticker. Got stopped by Highway Patrol, and my wife didn’t have her SCDL on her—she was arrested for DUI even after passing the test (we have witnesses). The truck got impounded, and we ended up paying over $500 to get her and the truck back. Now the SCDMV is blaming each other—local office says it’s Columbia’s fault, Columbia says it’s a local issue. Months later, no one’s taking responsibility. What can we do here?
Man, that sounds like such a nightmare. Have you tried writing a formal letter to both offices? It’s harder for them to ignore that.

No, I haven’t done that yet. What would I even say in the letter? Just lay out the whole story?

Exactly, just explain everything step by step—dates, costs, and the mess between the offices. Ask for reimbursement too.

Yeah, and make sure to send it certified mail so they can’t say they didn’t get it.
Wait, your wife got arrested even though she passed the DUI test? How is that even legal?

They said it was because she didn’t have her license on her. Still feels like overkill to me.

That’s wild. She might be able to contest that with a criminal defense attorney, especially since you have witnesses.
DMVs are the worst, lol. I had to deal with a similar back-and-forth last year. Ended up filing a complaint with my state Attorney General’s office.

Did the AG actually help? I’m so over dealing with this on my own.

Yeah, they got things moving for me. Sometimes just knowing someone higher up is looking into it gets them to act faster.
IDK if this helps, but you might want to keep detailed records of every call and email with them. It’s a pain, but it works.

Good idea. I’ve been jotting stuff down, but I’ll organize it better. Thanks for the tip.
FYI, small claims court could be an option if they’re ignoring you. Might be worth looking into.

Interesting. Do you know what the process is like?

It’s pretty straightforward. You file a claim, show your evidence, and the judge decides. Costs a small fee to file.
