DMV questioning my insurance coverage... what should I do?

I received a letter from the DMV questioning my insurance coverage for the dates 8/22/24 - 8/30/24. They asked me to verify and respond before 11/6. Anyone know what I should do? I tried going to the DMV today but they told me I need an appointment or to walk in on Wednesday. IDK what to do next.

Seems like the DMV is just trying to make sure you were insured during that period. If you have proof of coverage, you should take it to them. Do you have anything from your insurance company?

Yeah, I had something similar happen. Just bring all your proof and explain the situation. The DMV is usually pretty good about clearing things up once they see the proof.

@Milo
Exactly, they’ll just need proof of insurance for those dates to clear the hold. Hopefully, it’s just a paperwork issue.

Did the DMV tell you exactly what you need to show them? A lot of times, they’ll accept payment receipts or new insurance documents. It could help clear the gap.

They didn’t say exactly, but I paid USAA $540 recently. They still show a lapse though. I switched to a new company after that.

This happened to me before too. I had a lapse in coverage, but when I provided proof that I switched to a new insurance company, they cleared the issue. Do you have the paperwork from your new insurance?

@Zoren
Yeah, I switched to Bristol West on 10/22/24 after Progressive ended on 10/22/24. Just trying to clear the gap between 8/22-8/30.

Have you tried contacting your previous insurer (USAA) to explain? Sometimes they can provide a letter confirming that you paid but were canceled.

I didn’t think of that. I’ll try reaching out to USAA. Thanks for the idea!

Thanks for the help, everyone! I’ll get in touch with USAA and see if they can provide anything to clear up the lapse.
