Do I need to return license plates to cancel registration?

Hey everyone, I’m in New Mexico and want to cancel the registration on two vehicles. Do I need to return the license plates, or is it okay to just keep them? I’ve heard mixed things, so just trying to be sure. Anyone know how this works?

I’m in NM too! From what I’ve heard, you don’t have to return them. It’s optional. Have you checked with the DMV?

Yeah, DEF is right. In Albuquerque, it’s not required. You can keep them or turn them in—it’s up to you.

Pretty much! But if you’re not using the plate, you can recycle it. No legal issues with keeping it though.

I turned mine in when I moved to a different state. Just felt like the safer option, but it wasn’t mandatory.

Makes sense. I guess turning them in is just for peace of mind then?

FYI, you can always call the Bernalillo County office if you’re unsure. They’re usually helpful with stuff like this.

Just curious, what happens if you keep the plates and don’t cancel the registration? Do you still get charged for it?

Good question. Nah, once you cancel the registration, the plates are basically inactive. No extra charges.
