Do you have to take a written test when renewing your license over 70?

I heard that if you’re over 70 in California, you don’t have to take a written test when renewing your driver’s license. Is that true or is there something else I need to know about the process? I’m not really sure what applies to me… anyone else know?

I think it’s true for the most part. From what I know, they usually just make you do an in-person renewal and a vision test. No written test unless you’ve had a bunch of violations or accidents recently. But maybe double-check with the DMV just in case?

I think if you’re over 70, they also make you renew in person instead of online. I’m not sure about the written test, but yeah, if there’s any medical history or stuff, you might need to take it.

I had no idea this was a thing! But yeah, it sounds like the main issue is if you have any health issues or driving problems. My aunt’s in her 70s and had to take a written test last time because of some traffic tickets.

I would just call the DMV to ask exactly what’s needed for your situation. Every time I’ve gone in, they’ve had different rules depending on the circumstances.
