Curious about the rules around dumpster diving. Is it considered illegal, or does it depend on where you are? I’ve heard mixed things and want to get the facts straight. Anyone know how it works?
In Ontario, my mother works at a Zehrs. They had a woman who had spent the last week or so dumpster diving. Management was concerned, but nobody else was. She was led away after they reported her to the police. Grocery businesses ‘own’ everything, even when it’s thrown away, but no charges were made. Dumpster diving isn’t always prohibited, but most supermarkets are ungrateful and would prefer that the items remain in the trash than be given away for free. You’ll be “in trouble,” but you won’t be charged.
