I just got a letter saying I might be dismissed from school for cheating. They’re claiming someone else did my work because of IP addresses showing different locations. Has anyone dealt with this before? How should I respond?
Whoa, that’s tough. Did they say what evidence they have? Maybe you can explain if you’ve been traveling or something?

Yeah, they mentioned IP addresses showing different locations. I’ve traveled a lot, so that’s probably it. Not sure how to prove it though.

Maybe provide travel receipts or flight details to back up your explanation? That could help show why your IP changed.
Did they give you a chance to respond? Some schools require a formal hearing before making big decisions like expulsion.

Not yet, they just sent the letter. Should I ask for a hearing directly or wait for them to bring it up?

Definitely ask for a hearing. Schools usually have procedures for this stuff, and you need to make your case.
You could write a letter explaining your side. Be honest but also clear about why the accusations aren’t accurate.

That’s a good idea. Should I address it to the dean or someone else?

Usually, it’s the dean or whoever sent you the letter. Just make sure to stay professional but firm.
If they don’t accept your letter, ask for a face-to-face meeting. Bring all your proof with you.

Good point. I feel like that would help more than just emailing back and forth.

Exactly. Seeing you explain in person might make them reconsider. Plus, they can’t ignore you as easily.
What’s their policy on academic misconduct? Check their guidelines to see if they’re following proper procedures.

I’ll look into that. Thanks for the reminder. Didn’t even think to check the policies.

FYI, most schools require notice and a hearing before doing anything major like dismissing someone. Don’t let them skip steps.
