Got a Double Child Support Payment and Don’t Know Why

Don’t worry about it. If it’s extra, it could be for arrears.

Call your attorney to document it, then put the money aside. If they ask for it back, you’ll have it ready.

They probably won’t ask for it back.

Trust me, when someone realizes they’re missing money, they’ll come for it. I used to work in a bank, and a lot of people got into trouble by spending accidental deposits.

@Ray
It’s different with child support. The payer has to go to court, and the overpayment gets credited until it evens out.

Don’t worry too much. Just set it aside until you know for sure. Clerical mistakes happen a lot.

This is what you should do, OP.

If they do want it back, they’ll go through the court, not you.

You should tell OP, not me.

Maybe ask your ex if more was taken?

Edit: I didn’t realize the ex was abusive, sorry.

OP already said her ex is abusive and she doesn’t want to contact him.

OP said she isn’t in contact with her ex and doesn’t want to be.

If he got a bonus, the system might just be taking the usual percentage from it.

He probably got a bonus. They do that here in NY too when earnings increase.

Any overpayment I got was collected out of the last payment of the year. Just save it for now.

Thanks for letting me know, this helps!

You haven’t gotten the payment yet, right? If it’s not owed, they won’t send it to you. They’ll either keep it or refund it to your ex.

I haven’t, but they said it’s pending and will be in my account tomorrow.

@Huxley
If it’s an accounting error, they’ll want it back. Holding onto it for now is a good idea.

@Huxley
If he says it’s an overpayment, don’t send him money directly. Let him deal with the payment management.

I had this issue years ago. The state would take my money evenly but send random amounts to my ex, which caused all sorts of problems at tax time. Eventually, we just cut the state out of the process, and I paid her directly.
