Got a speeding ticket in a school zone... should I fight it or just take the defensive driving course?

Hey y’all, so I got a speeding ticket in a school zone 2 days ago, but honestly, I wasn’t speeding. I explained to the cop that I saw the End School Zone sign and started speeding up to 33-40mph. I have dash cam footage showing my speed was only 17-20mph when I passed the sign, and then I started cruising until I saw the End School Zone sign. I even slowed down after that, but the cop still gave me the ticket. I’m wondering if I should just take the Defensive Driving Course to avoid the ticket showing up on my record, or should I fight it in court and show my footage? Any advice on what I should do? Also, will the Defensive Driving Course actually clear my record? Thanks in advance!

That’s tough. I’d say fighting it in court could be worth it, especially since you’ve got the dash cam footage. But it depends on whether or not that footage will hold up in court. Have you looked into the details of that footage? Does it clearly show everything you need?

In Texas, the Defensive Driving Course can sometimes get the ticket dismissed from your record. It depends on if you’ve taken one recently or not. I’d check if you’re eligible for that first, then decide if fighting it in court is worth it.

Also, I was wondering if anyone’s gone through something similar? How did it turn out for you?

Just to clarify, if I take the Defensive Driving Course, does that mean the ticket doesn’t go on my record at all? I’ve heard mixed things about that.

Honestly, if the footage is as clear as you say, I’d fight it in court. If you win, you won’t have to worry about it at all. But if you’re trying to avoid the court process, the Defensive Driving Course is a pretty solid option.
