I’ve been chatting with a marine I met online for a few months now, and he says his bank account is frozen. Apparently, he’s been fined for going AWOL and can’t get his funds to pay it off. He asked if I could receive his allowance check and now wants my login info for mobile deposit. Is this normal, or should I be worried?
Oof, sounds sketchy to me. I’ve heard about scams where they ask for personal info like that. I wouldn’t give out any login details.

That’s what I was thinking… I just needed to confirm it wasn’t standard practice. Thanks!

Yeah, this definitely sounds like the ‘stranded soldier’ scam. They use these emotional stories to get you to trust them.
Just to clarify, did he actually ask for your bank login info? That’s a huge red flag if so.

Yeah, he wants the login info to deposit a check through mobile banking. Felt off to me.

Run, seriously! They might try to get into your account or even use it to cash fake checks.
It’s actually really common for scammers to claim they’re in the military to gain trust. Just don’t give him anything personal, and stay safe.

Thanks, I feel better knowing I’m not overthinking this!

Yeah, unfortunately, lots of people fall for it. Good call on asking for advice!
Honestly, if you’ve never met this person IRL, I’d be wary. These ‘AWOL fine’ stories are super common with scammers.

Never met in person, just online. That definitely adds to the sketchiness, huh?

Absolutely. It’s way too risky, especially when they ask for your personal details.
I’ve heard of a similar situation from a friend. They always promise to come visit ‘if only you help them first.’ It’s a classic move.

Good to know, I’ll keep an eye out for anything else suspicious.

Yep, sadly, it’s just a common tactic they use. Trust your gut on this one!
