Hey y’all, I’m looking to go back to school but hoping to find a way to do it for free in Texas. I’ve heard there are options for veterans and maybe even some community college programs that cover tuition? Anyone got details?
Yeah, there’s something called the Hazlewood Act for veterans. If you served, you can get up to 150 hours of tuition waived at Texas public colleges!

150 hours? That’s a lot of classes! Does it cover everything or just tuition?
@August
Just tuition! You’d still need to pay for books, supplies, and living expenses, unfortunately.
I think some community colleges in Texas have free-tuition programs for residents. It’s usually for people with financial need or first-time students.

True, but you’d probably need to check with each college about their specific requirements.

Thanks, I’ll look into that! Do you know if it’s mostly tuition only or if it includes other fees?
@Kasey
Mostly just tuition, I think. You might still have to pay for textbooks and stuff.
For senior citizens, Texas lets people 65 and up take a few classes for free each semester. Great for those who want to learn something new!

Oh wow, didn’t know that! Does it work for people who just want to take classes for fun?
@Quinn
Yep! Up to six credit hours per semester, as long as they meet residency requirements.
For younger folks, some schools have programs for freshmen and transfer students. They look at your FAFSA to see if you qualify for free tuition.

Good point! They usually make you keep a certain GPA and take a minimum number of credits too.
@WanaLearnedPal
Right, so it’s not totally free if you don’t keep up with the requirements.
Just wanted to add, some community colleges started offering free college programs to boost enrollment. So it’s worth asking them if you qualify!

Does every community college in Texas offer this?
@Roan
Not all, but a few do! It’s usually for in-state residents and might be tied to your income level.
