How do I deal with a traffic citation for failing to stay in my lane?

Hey everyone, I got a traffic citation for ‘Fail to operate within a single lane (Accident resulting).’ This happened after I dozed off while driving and ended up in a ditch. I wasn’t hurt badly, and no one else was involved, thankfully. I was coming back from a procedure where they gave me Lorazepam, which might’ve made me extra tired. Anyway, the court date is coming up, and I’m not sure if I should call the court or just show up. Anyone been in a similar situation?

Man, that sounds rough. Glad you’re okay though! Have you tried calling the court listed on the citation? They should be able to guide you.

Thanks! I haven’t called yet, but I’ll check the info on the ticket and give them a ring. Do they explain everything when you call?

Yeah, they’ll usually explain the process and confirm your court date. Sometimes they’ll even tell you if you qualify for programs like traffic school to reduce points.

Do you plan to plead guilty or contest it? If you plead guilty, you might be eligible for Deferred Traffic Prosecution in Utah.

What’s Deferred Traffic Prosecution? Sorry, I’m not familiar with the term.

Basically, you pay a fine and maybe do traffic school, but it keeps points off your record. It’s worth looking into if you don’t want your insurance rates to spike.

Got it, that sounds like a good option. I’ll ask the court about it when I call. Thanks!

If you decide to contest it, make sure to bring any documentation. Photos of the accident scene or a note about the medication might help.

That’s a good idea! I didn’t think about the medication part. I’ll gather everything before the court date. Appreciate it!

Did the ticket say anything about needing a lawyer? I’d at least consult one if you’re unsure about your options.

No mention of a lawyer on the ticket, but maybe I’ll look into it. Do you think it’s necessary for something like this?

Not always, but a lawyer can help if you’re trying to reduce penalties or explain mitigating factors like your medication.

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. I feel a lot more confident about what to do now. I’ll let you know how it goes!
