How do I deregister my car after it was totaled in a storm?

My 2021 Audi Q7 got totaled during a recent storm in Lake Toxaway, NC. The insurance company has fully compensated me, so now I need to figure out how to remove the car from registration. This is my first time dealing with something like this. Any advice?

You’ll need to get the total loss paperwork from your insurance company and then head to the DMV to deregister the car.

What’s total loss paperwork? Never heard of that before.

It’s the official document from your insurance confirming the car is a total loss. Ask your insurance company for it!

Make sure to call the DMV first. Sometimes they require an appointment, and it can save you a trip.

Good idea! I’ll call them tomorrow to check. Thanks for the tip.

When I dealt with something similar, I also had to return the plates. Check if NC requires that.

Oh wow, didn’t even think of that. I’ll ask about the plates when I call the DMV.

Did you notify the DMV already? They’ll need to know it’s been totaled.

Not yet, this is my first time handling something like this. I’ll notify them once I get all the paperwork ready.

Also, FYI, keep copies of everything. Sometimes they lose records, and having a backup can save you a headache.

Smart advice. I’ll make sure to do that. Thanks!
