How do I evict my sister and nephew from my property?

So, I bought a farm from my dad back in 2021, and recently things have gotten tense with my sister and nephew. They don’t live on the property, but they’ve been storing their stuff (like vehicles, lawnmowers, ATVs, etc.) in my sheds. I don’t charge them rent, but now I want them to remove their stuff. I don’t have any written agreements with them, and I’m not sure how to go about getting them to move their stuff out. Any advice on what to do here?

That sounds like a tricky situation. I’d recommend giving them a 30-day notice to remove their belongings. If they don’t do it, you can sell or dispose of the stuff. It’s probably the legal route to go. Do you have any kind of agreement with them about storing things?

@Eli
Nope, no agreements at all. They just started leaving their stuff there, and it was fine at first, but now I need the space back. I guess a 30-day notice is the best move.

Yeah, giving them a written notice is definitely the way to go. If they ignore it, you can legally move forward with clearing out their stuff. Just make sure the notice is clear and sent to them properly, so there’s no confusion.

@Mary
Got it, thanks! I was worried it’d be more complicated, but that sounds pretty straightforward.

Also, make sure you keep a record of any communications with them, just in case it gets messy. It’ll help protect you legally later if anything comes up.

Good idea, I’ll make sure to do that. I just want to handle this as smoothly as possible.

I had a similar issue with a friend once, and honestly, just giving a notice and sticking to it helped a lot. If they still don’t take their stuff, you can hire a professional to remove it legally.

That’s helpful to know! I wasn’t sure what my options were if they didn’t comply. I’ll definitely look into getting help if needed.

Hey, just to clarify, if they don’t live there, and you don’t have any lease or rental agreement, it’s pretty much up to you to decide when they need to move their stuff, right?

Exactly, they’re just storing things there, so the 30-day notice should be enough to get them to clear it out. No lease = no special rules for them.
