How do I handle a teacher physically hurting my child...?

Last week, my son’s teacher put him in a headlock and covered his mouth during class. This happened on 9/17/24. The teacher was only on paid leave for three days, and now he’s back in the classroom. I haven’t been given any info about the investigation, and I’m really worried about my son’s safety seeing this teacher every day. What can I do next? Anyone been through something similar?

That sounds awful. Have you escalated this to the school board yet? They might be able to help.

I’ve tried both the principal and the superintendent. Nothing’s being done so far. Not sure what to do next.

If the board isn’t responding, maybe file a complaint with the state education department?

Did the district share their investigation findings with you? You should be allowed to see them.

I asked for them last week, but no response yet. I guess I’ll have to follow up again.

They might take longer to get back. Give it another week, but definitely keep pushing for answers.

If pressing charges is an option, the police will investigate and decide if charges are valid. That could lead to more action.

Would pressing charges put this on the teacher’s record right away?

Not immediately. Only if there’s a conviction does it go on their record.

You could also consider a civil suit. It’s worth speaking to a lawyer about that option.

Any idea how I start that process? It sounds overwhelming.

You’d need to file a complaint. Maybe ask a lawyer to review it before submitting?
