How do I replace a lost driver’s license online in California?

So, I lost my California driver’s license and need to get a new one sent to my address. Anyone know how to do this online? I’d prefer to avoid a trip to the DMV if I can. Appreciate any help!

Yeah, you can totally do it online through the California DMV site. Just log in to your MyDMV account, or create one if you don’t have it. Then there’s an option to request a duplicate license.

What’s MyDMV? Is that like an app or something?

It’s more like an online portal. You use it to manage DMV stuff like license renewals, address updates, etc. Super handy.

Don’t forget you have to pay $33 for the replacement fee. You can do it with a credit or debit card right on the site.

Hmm, not sure. I think online they only take cards. You might need to visit the DMV if you don’t have one.

After you apply online, they’ll email you a temporary license that’s good for 60 days. The new one will come in the mail in about 3–4 weeks.

What if it doesn’t show up? Like, do I just wait forever?

Nah, if you don’t get it within 60 days, call the DMV. They’ll help you check the status.

FYI, if your address isn’t updated with the DMV, you should fix that first. It takes like 72 hours to process.

Oof, I just moved. Does that mean I have to wait 3 days before applying?

Yeah, pretty much. If you apply before updating, they’ll send it to your old address. Better safe than sorry!

Btw, if you want a REAL ID, you can’t do that online. You’ll need to visit the DMV in person with documents.

What’s a REAL ID? Is it like a regular license or something different?

It’s basically a federal version of a driver’s license. You’ll need it for stuff like boarding domestic flights or entering federal buildings.
