How soon can I renew my driver's license in California... anyone know?

My driver’s license expires on January 22, 2025, and I’m wondering how soon I can renew it? I last renewed it in January 2020, and I’m in California. Anyone know the timeline or process for renewing a license here?

You can actually renew your license up to 6 months before it expires! So, you could renew anytime after July 2024.

Yeah, same here. I renewed my license early last time and it was super easy. Just make sure you have a CA DMV account for the online renewal if you want to go that route.

I didn’t think about that. I’ll make sure I have my DMV account ready. Thanks for the heads-up!

Don’t worry too much about it, the DMV will send you a reminder when it’s time to renew. But it’s good to plan ahead, especially with how busy they can get sometimes.

Good to know, I’ll still try to get it done early though, just to avoid the rush. Appreciate it!

I think the DMV website is pretty easy to use for renewals, but sometimes they ask for additional info, so be prepared for that. Just FYI, you can also renew by mail if you’re eligible.

Oh, renewing by mail? I didn’t know that was an option. I’ll check if I’m eligible for that. Thanks!

One thing to note, if your license is expired for more than a year, you might have to take a written test or even a driving test, so be sure to renew before it expires if you can.
