I’m trying to figure out how to file for bankruptcy with limited or no income. I’ve heard there are ways to get assistance or even access free forms online, but I’m not sure where to start. Anyone been through this or have advice?
First step is checking with your state bar association. They sometimes offer programs to help people in tough financial situations.

I didn’t even know that was an option. Do they offer free consultations or just general advice?
@MysteryMaverick
Depends on the program, but some offer free legal aid or reduced-cost services. Worth reaching out to them.
You can also check the bankruptcy court’s website for free forms. They’re straightforward and can save you some money.

Do you know the site? Or is it something I need to Google?
@MysteryMaverick
Yeah, it’s uscourts.gov. They have all the bankruptcy forms there for free.
@MysteryMaverick
I used that site too. Just make sure you download the right ones for your case, like Chapter 7 or Chapter 13.
If you’re on government assistance, you might qualify for a fee waiver. Courts sometimes waive the filing fee if you can’t afford it.

Oh, I didn’t know that. How do you apply for a fee waiver?
@MysteryMaverick
There’s a specific form for it on the same site. You just have to show proof of your financial situation.
@MysteryMaverick
It’s called Form 103B. Super easy to fill out if you’re already collecting assistance.
You might also want to look into legal aid organizations. They can guide you through the process if it’s overwhelming.

Are those free, or do they charge based on income?
@MysteryMaverick
Usually free or super low-cost if you qualify. Just depends on where you’re located.
@MysteryMaverick
A lot of them specialize in helping people with no income, so definitely worth checking out.
Have you tried calling the bankruptcy court directly? They can’t give legal advice but might point you to resources.

Good idea. I’ll give that a shot. Do they usually have helplines or something?
@MysteryMaverick
Yep, most courts have a clerk’s office you can call. They’re usually pretty helpful.
@MysteryMaverick
I did that when I filed. They gave me a list of local legal aid places too.
