Is it legal for Job Corps to kick my son out for making a flyer about pay cuts?

I got a call tonight telling me my son is being kicked out of Job Corps because he made a flyer in protest of his pay being cut without any notice or reason. The flyer didn’t even have his name on it, but someone must’ve ratted him out. They made him fill out a statement without me being there, and he didn’t even know his rights! When I showed up, I couldn’t get in because the gate was locked and I didn’t have a code. The staff told me that because it’s federal property, he has no rights. They wouldn’t give me copies of any documents, even though he’s a minor. They also wouldn’t let him pack his stuff or get his medication. This just seems wrong… can anyone tell me if this is legal?

This sounds pretty messed up. I’m not a legal expert, but minors usually have rights, even on federal property. They definitely should have informed you about what was going on. I’d say this could be a violation of due process.

@Hayes
Yeah, I agree. They can’t just take a statement from him without notifying you, especially when he’s a minor. Sounds like they didn’t follow the rules here.

Exactly! I’d definitely consult a lawyer to see what options you have. This seems like something they might not get away with if it goes to the right people.

That’s insane! Also, refusing to give you a copy of the statement or dismissal papers is so sketchy. You should be able to review all that stuff since you’re his parent.

Yeah, I’ve heard of similar cases where schools or programs refuse parents access to records, but that’s usually not okay. I’d definitely push for transparency here.

I don’t know much about federal programs, but it sounds like they’re using ‘federal property’ as an excuse to get away with treating him unfairly. You should look into what your rights are.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. Federal property doesn’t mean he has no rights. That’s probably just something they’re saying to brush it off.

The part about not giving him his meds seems a bit dangerous. If he needs those meds regularly, it’s not okay for them to just mail it later. That’s a health risk.

Yeah, that’s really concerning. I’d call and make sure they’re returning his meds ASAP. If they don’t, that could be a big issue.

Isn’t kicking him out because of the flyer kind of a First Amendment issue? Like, shouldn’t he have the right to protest without getting kicked out?

That’s a good point! I think it could be a violation if he was punished for just expressing his views. Seems like they may be violating his rights.

@River
Yeah, exactly! I’d definitely look into what protections he has for free speech. That’s something worth fighting for.
