Is it malpractice if a dentist didn’t disclose a broken root canal file?

I went in for a root canal, and halfway through, the dentist mentioned my tooth was infected and that I’d need to see a specialist. I found out later that a file had broken off inside the tooth canal, but the dentist didn’t tell me that at the time. Is this considered malpractice? And should I or my insurance have to cover the extra costs for the specialist?

It sounds like it could be malpractice, especially if the dentist didn’t tell you about the broken file. Dental professionals are supposed to be transparent about complications.

That’s what I thought too. He mentioned the infection but didn’t say anything about the file.

@Macon
Right, and if he didn’t disclose that, it’s worth looking into. It might be good to get those X-rays and records.

If the dentist is the one who caused the issue, you shouldn’t have to pay out of pocket for the fix. Maybe try asking them to cover the cost?

Good idea. I’ll ask them if they’d cover it, since it wasn’t my fault.

@Macon
Definitely. If they refuse, you could even ask your insurance to negotiate with them.

It’s common for dentists to cover additional costs if a complication happens due to their treatment. Keep all your records, just in case.

Thanks, I plan to gather everything. I’m hoping they’ll cooperate.

Smart move. Keeping everything organized will help if it comes to a complaint.

File a complaint with your state’s dental board if they don’t take responsibility. Sometimes, they’ll help push for a solution.

@Macon
It’s worth a try. They can help in situations where there’s a lack of transparency.

Hope the specialist can help with the tooth. It’s frustrating when things like this aren’t fully explained to patients.

Thank you. Fingers crossed they can handle it.

Best of luck. Hopefully, the dentist’s office steps up too.
