Is it okay for an IG complaint about waste/fraud/abuse to be handled by the same command where it happened?

Hey, I submitted an IG complaint about some waste/fraud/abuse to the Department of Defense hotline. The complaint has been passed down the chain of command and eventually reached the local IG. But the IG office is based in the same HQ where the incidents occurred. In fact, the IG I’ve been in touch with seems to know the people involved. I’m worried there might be a conflict of interest or even retaliation, since I’m just a civilian reporting this. I’ve also had trouble finding the right lawyer to guide me through this process. Anyone else been through something similar or have advice on this situation?

Yeah, that sounds like a tricky situation. I’d definitely be concerned about potential bias or retaliation. Usually, these things are handled at a higher level than where the issue took place, but sometimes the direct unit might still get involved for investigative purposes.

@Olen
So are you saying it’s normal for someone from the same unit to investigate? I thought it would always be someone from a different command.

Yeah, it’s common for the higher command to appoint an investigator from the direct unit, but the oversight usually comes from a higher command SJA (Staff Judge Advocate) or Commander. So it’s more about supervision rather than the person doing the investigation.

I think it’s important to know that there are rules about reprisals for whistleblowers. If you feel like you’re being retaliated against, there are specific protections, and the DOD hotline can handle that too.

@Rowan
Thanks for the info! I wasn’t sure how that worked, but I’m glad to know there’s something in place. I’ll check out the DOD hotline if needed.

It might take a while, but things have to go through the government process. It sounds frustrating, but sometimes patience is needed with these investigations. Hang in there!

Yeah, it’s definitely a slow process. But I agree, it’s just how the system works. If you haven’t faced retaliation yet, that’s a good sign!

The IG process can be a bit of a maze, but once you get through it, you’ll have more clarity. Keep pushing for updates, though, if you’re not getting enough info.

I’m trying to stay patient, but it’s hard when you don’t know where things stand. I’ll keep following up.

If you feel like the investigation isn’t being handled properly or fairly, it might be helpful to contact a lawyer who specializes in military law to help navigate things and ensure you’re being heard.

@Torrin
I’ve been trying to find the right lawyer, but it’s been tough. Do you have any recommendations or advice on where to start looking?
