Is it okay for schools to isolate kids like this...?

My son just started kindergarten, and he has ADHD, a tic disorder, is a sensory seeker, and has behavioral challenges. He struggles with dysregulation, aggression, and social skills, but he has an IEP with goals to work on these. The school decided to split his recess—one with a small group to practice social skills and another doing independent play indoors. I feel like he needs outdoor play to help with his energy. Can they do this? Does it go against his IEP?

That does sound tough. I think outdoor time is super important for sensory needs. Have you asked about a 1:1 aide?

Not yet, but I’m thinking about it. Can they refuse if I request one?

They can, but you could push back. Maybe ask during the IEP meeting on the 27th?

Doesn’t the IEP have to follow goals for social skills? Sounds like isolating him might go against that.

That’s what I’m thinking! It feels like they’re ignoring what he needs socially.

You could bring that up at the meeting. Ask how this plan helps with those goals.

Have they explained why they’re keeping him inside? Maybe they’re worried about safety?

Yeah, he had a rough week—some aggression and broke another kid’s glasses. Still feels unfair though.

Maybe suggest more support instead of isolation? Like someone helping him during recess?

The walking breaks and skill-building time sound good. Are those working yet?

Not sure—they’re new, and it’s only been 8 days. Hoping they help.

Maybe give it a little time and track how he responds? Then bring it up in the meeting.

FYI, you can always push for more outdoor time if it’s important for his ADHD. Maybe suggest alternatives?

Good point. I’ll bring it up—thanks for the idea!
