Just finished a rent to own, what do I need to do now?

So I had this rent house that I sold through a rent-to-own deal. The agreement’s all done now and paid off. Just wondering what the next steps are to actually transfer the ownership to the buyer? I’m in Texas btw and there weren’t any extra terms in the agreement about the transfer. The mortgage is fully paid off too. Kinda stuck on what I’m supposed to do now lol.

You’ll probably need to do the deed transfer now. Since you’re in Texas and the buyer’s finished the payments, it’s time to get the ownership in their name.

Is that something I can do myself or do I need a lawyer to handle it?

@Finley
You can do it yourself technically, but it’s smart to get a real estate lawyer involved to make sure it’s all done right. Especially if you’re not 100% sure on the paperwork.

@Finley
Yup, did mine with a lawyer just to be safe. Worth the peace of mind tbh.

Since the rent-to-own is complete and there’s no extra terms in your contract, you should be good to go with just transferring the deed. It’s a pretty standard process.

What exactly is the ‘deed transfer’? Sorry if that’s a dumb question lol.

@Teegan
Nah not dumb at all lol. The deed is the doc that shows who legally owns the house. You’d need to sign it over to the buyer, then file it with your county recorder’s office.

@Teegan
Some places call it a warranty deed or a general deed depending on the state, but yeah—same idea.

Since there’s no weird terms in the agreement and the house is paid off, this should be straightforward. Just have the deed transferred and you’re done pretty much.

Sounds easy enough. Do you just go to a title company or something?

@Jordan
Yeah, either that or an attorney. A title company can prep the paperwork and get everything filed for you.

I think once the rent-to-own is done and payments are complete, you just need to finalize the deed. If there’s no lien or anything, that’s all that’s left really.

OP said the mortgage is paid off, so no lien. Sounds like a simple deed filing now.

Yeah I made sure everything was cleared before wrapping up the agreement. Just wasn’t sure how the official handover works.

Also, if you’re chatting with a lawyer online, ask if they can draft the deed for you. Some do it over chat and send docs directly. Kinda convenient ngl.

Wait they do that online now? That’s way easier than I thought.

@Finley
Yeah, some services offer chat options with real estate lawyers and they send over forms you can sign electronically or print and file.
