Just got terminated today after failing a breathalyzer last Friday. I’ve worked here for 16 years, and it’s tough to deal with this sudden change. I asked HR to extend my benefits because I’ve been going through some personal stuff, like dental pain. They said the firing was only because of the breathalyzer test. Now they’re reviewing my severance. Anyone have advice on next steps?
That really sucks. You should definitely talk to a lawyer to help negotiate your severance package. It could make a big difference.

Totally agree. A lawyer can help you get what you deserve, especially after 16 years.
@Jin
Good call, I’ll be reaching out to one soon. Thanks for the suggestion!
Wow, 16 years is a long time to be at one place. That must be hard. Good on you for asking about extending your benefits.

Yeah, it’s tough to start over after being somewhere for so long. Counseling could help with the adjustment.
@Darcy
I actually mentioned that to HR, and they seemed open to the idea. Hoping they approve it!
I’ve known people who got decent severance packages after situations like this, especially after getting some legal advice. Definitely push HR on that.

Thanks! I’ll make sure to bring that up when I talk to them again.
Can I ask, what exactly do you mean by ‘probable cause’? Was there more to it than just the failed test?

Oh no, they said the ‘probable cause’ was just the breathalyzer test from last Friday. Nothing else was involved.
Definitely bring up the lease issue with HR since you just moved for the promotion. They might be more willing to help than you think.

I’m definitely going to mention that next time we talk. It’s a tough spot since I’m locked into that lease for a while.
