I work nights in Kentucky at a shipping company and my hours are from 10pm to 6am, Sunday to Thursday. I’m also in college full-time. They just announced some mandatory training from Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, and I have a couple of questions. I’ve heard rumors that we might have to work while doing the training, which would mean like 16-hour days with no sleep… can they actually make us do that? Also, since I have classes during the day, do you think I could get fired for not attending the training if it’s outside my regular hours? My contract is super vague about my hours. Just trying to figure out if I’m in trouble here… any thoughts?
That sounds rough, man. IDK if they can make you do both at the same time. Seems a bit much, right?

Yeah, I’d check your state labor laws. They can’t just wear you out like that.

Honestly, if you’re not contractually obligated to be there during the day, you might have a case.
I had a similar situation before. They tried to pull this on me, but I just pointed out my schedule and they backed off.

So you didn’t get in trouble for not going?

Nope, just told them I had classes and they had to work with me.
As a college student, you shouldn’t be fired for missing training that’s outside your regular hours. That seems unfair.

But what if they say it’s mandatory? Like, they could argue it’s part of your job.

True, but if it’s not in your contract, you might have a legit argument.
I’d definitely consult someone about your rights. Vague contracts can be tricky.

What do you mean by consulting someone? Like a lawyer?

Yeah, or maybe a labor union if you have one. Just to get advice.
Good luck with all this. Just remember to take care of yourself too.
