Hey everyone… I’m really at my wit’s end here. I live in an apartment in New York, and my next-door neighbor, an elderly woman, keeps yelling about her downstairs neighbor supposedly smoking. She claims she had lung cancer and yells out the window despite there being no sign of any smoke. It’s gotten worse, and now she leaves her door open all the time, yelling into the hallway. This happens every single day! I’ve tried talking to her politely, but she just gets more upset. I’m worried about her safety and my sanity—any advice on what I can do?
Have you thought about contacting Adult Protective Services? It sounds like she really might need help, especially with her door being open all the time.

Yeah, definitely do that! Leaving the door open is a huge safety risk.

I agree! They can assess her situation and see if she needs more support.
Isn’t it a bit concerning that she’s yelling at people for no reason? Maybe there’s something more going on with her health.

Totally! Sounds like she could be having some issues. Have you noticed anything else strange?
You might want to document everything. Videos of her yelling could help if you need to get the management involved more seriously.

Good idea! Just make sure you’re not invading her privacy while you do that.
What about the police? If she’s causing a disturbance, they might be able to help.

I tried that… they say she acts innocent when they come. It’s frustrating!
It sounds like she might be experiencing some kind of dementia. Those behaviors can be signs. Definitely talk to APS!

Yeah, and if she has no family, they might be able to step in faster.
