Hey everyone, I could use some advice. My son was sent to DAEP after pushing another student at school. The assistant principal said it was because of the student code of conduct, but my son explained he didn’t mean to hurt the other kid—he just wanted him to stop calling him dumb and stupid. I feel like the bullying wasn’t properly investigated before they made the decision. I’m looking to appeal but unsure if I should email the assistant principal, go to the principal, or fill out the official form right away. Any suggestions on the best way to handle this?
Sounds like they rushed the decision. Did you already gather evidence about the bullying?

Not yet, just the school’s documentation and what my son shared. Should I start with witness statements?

Definitely. Statements from other kids or teachers could really help your case.
Did they explain how the code of conduct applies? Sometimes admins skip important steps.

They just said they have to uphold the code. Didn’t sound like they considered my son’s intent.

If they didn’t consider intent, that’s worth bringing up in the appeal!
You could email both the assistant principal and principal to cover your bases. Mention your concerns about the rushed investigation.

Good idea, I’ll do that. Should I include references to the student code of conduct?

Absolutely. Point out anything that shows they didn’t follow the process properly.
What’s DAEP? Sorry, not familiar with the term.

It’s a disciplinary alternative education program, kinda like suspension but off-campus.

Got it, thanks! Sounds harsh if bullying wasn’t even looked into.
Filing the official form might be the safest route. If emails don’t work, it’ll cover you.

True, I’ll probably email first and follow up with the form if needed.

Good plan. Keep copies of everything you send!
