So I was told I don’t qualify for the California victim compensation program because I mentioned I’d sell my car to pay my father for his totaled vehicle. But it’s not just about the car. This accident has wrecked our lives, and now it’s just me and my 2-year-old trying to make it. I don’t know how to keep going, but I have to for him. Is there any way to hold the other driver accountable? CHP said they checked all cameras but found nothing, which seems odd since Imperial County has flock license plate readers. Any advice or similar experiences?
That sounds so tough, I’m really sorry you’re dealing with this. Have you thought about consulting a lawyer? They might help you figure out if there’s a way to track down the other driver.

Yeah, I’ve thought about it, but IDK if I can afford one. Are there lawyers who’ll work with no upfront costs?
@Tate
Totally, some personal injury lawyers work on contingency, so they only get paid if you win. Worth a shot!
I’m curious—what are flock cameras? Never heard of them.

Oh, they’re license plate readers at town entrances/exits. Thought they’d catch the car, but CHP says nothing came up.
@Tate
Got it. Weird they found nothing. Maybe the system glitched? You could push CHP to double-check.
Have you checked with local businesses near the accident? They might have security cams.

Good idea! I didn’t think of that. Do you know if CHP can request footage or if I’d have to?
@Tate
I think you’d have to ask, but CHP might help if you explain. Can’t hurt to try both ways!
I’ve been through a similar denial. The program doesn’t cover property damage, only things like medical bills. It sucks.

Ugh, that’s so frustrating. Did you find any other resources that could help?
@Tate
Yeah, try local advocacy groups or nonprofits. Some help with legal aid or financial support.
Don’t give up! It’s hard now, but you’re doing great for your kid. Have you considered counseling for support?

Thanks, I needed to hear that. I haven’t looked into counseling yet—any recommendations?
@Tate
Try local victim advocacy groups or even your county’s services. Some offer free or low-cost counseling.
